MAINTAINING A HEALTHY BLOOD PRESSURE IS AS EASY AS 1-2-3-4

Did you know that due to the latest update to blood pressure guidelines for American Adults, more than 103 million Americans are considered hypertensive? 

The new guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology, "lower the definition of high blood pressure to account for complications that can occur at lower numbers and to allow for earlier intervention."

Hypertension, or an elevated blood pressure reading on two or more occasions, affects more than one-third of adults 18 and over. 

Poorly controlled blood pressure is a risk factor for heart disease which remains the leading cause of death in the U.S. A healthy blood pressure reading is less than 120 over less than 80. 

Maintaining a healthy blood pressure is as easy as 1-2-3-4:

  1. Quit smoking and moderate alcohol consumption. Both substances can increase your risk for hypertension.
  2. Maintain a healthy diet low in sodium and saturated fat and limit processed foods.
  3. Engage in physical activity at least 3-4 days per week.
  4. Manage your stress levels.

WELLNESS TIP: Try beet juice! In a study published in February 2016 in JACC Heart Failure, 20 people (average age 69) with stiff hearts from high blood pressure were studied to see if adding beet juice to their diets might affect their blood pressure. After one week, their systolic blood pressure went down by 14 mm/Hg on average.
